What is procedure text?
When you buy a new computer or a new phone cell, there must be a book instruction in the box. Book instruction is also one of the examples of procedure text. When you want to download something from the internet, there are steps before we do that.
Those steps are also procedure text. Then, what is procedure text actually?
Procedure text is a text that explains or helps us how to make or use something.
Its social function is to describe how something is completely done through a sequence of steps.
Communicative purpose of this text is to describe how something is made through a sequence of actions or steps.
Generic Structure of Procedure Text- Goal : (e.g : How to use computer)
- Material or Equipment: (e.g : flash disc, keyboard, software etc.
- Step : (e.g : first, press the start button, second click the left mouse)
2. Material/Equipment: Bahan dan peralatan yang dibutuhkan untuk melakukan sesuatu
3. Steps: Langkah -langkah yang dibutuhkan untuk menyelesaikan suatu prosedur.

Meski begitu dalam banyak tulisan prosedur manual “Material or Equipment” kadang
dianggap tidak perlu disebutkan lagi karena sudah dimaklumi. (Ingat yah! tidak semua prosedur teks memuat material dan peralatan didalamnya). |
Purpose of Pocedure text
- To explain/tell (the reader) how to make/operate/do something through a
sequence of actions or steps.
- To explain steps/instruction to make/operate/do
something
Language Feature of Procedure Text
- Use adverbial of sequence / Using temporal conjunction (e.g: first, second, third, the last)
- Use command / imperative sentence (e.g : press the button on the . . ., click the mouse . . ., play start. .)
- Using adverbials (Adverbs) to express detail the time, place, manner accurate, for example, for five minutes, 2 hours, etc.
- Using action verbs, e.g : make, take, press, click
- Using Simple Present Tense

Example 1:
How to Send E-mails Via the Internet
E-mail is by far the most popular service on the Internet. Sending messages is a snap.
Just follow these simple steps.
1. Open your e-mail program and launch a new message window by clicking on the appropriate icon.
2. In the TO box, type the name of the recipient. Make sure you enter the address correctly or the message will return to you. You can also send copies (Cc:) and blind copies (Bcc:) to multiple addresses.
3. Type the subject of the e-mail.
4. Write your message in the message window. You can also copy text from a word processing programme and paste it into the window.
5. Click on the Send icon or select Send from the File menu.Example 2:
Task One for assignment 152MC (Working with Light) was to make an instruction manual which explains how to use light in photography. Effectively a guide to everything we learnt in this module.
We were asked to find two examples of a good and a bad instruction manual, and analyse them to give us ideas on how to make our own manuals. This was a pooled resource on Moodle which we could all view.
